Hybrid Heat is a combination High-Efficiency Furnace and Heat Pump Unit, two of the most energy-efficient systems in home heating technology. In other words, Hybrid Heating System is the synergy between the most efficient natural gas fuel heating system (e.g. high-efficiency furnaces) and heat pump units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hybrid Heat is a dual-fuel heating system, which reacts to environment changing temperatures and automatically adjusts to the most efficient energy saving method available to heat or cool a home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a Hybrid Heating System, a cold climate air-source heat pump is backed up by an auxiliary high-efficiency combustion furnace. When temperatures plunge below a certain level, the combustion furnace kicks in, keeping your house warm in even the coldest weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are Cold Climate Air Source Heat Pump Units? <\/strong>  <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is a highly energy efficient heating and cooling system which does not need a fossil fuel like natural gas to operate. The Cold Climate Air Source Heat Pump Units   consume electricity however in heating mode they generate heat more than 3 times of electricity they consume. In cooling mode they are also much more efficient than regular air conditioning units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Efficiency<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 10\u00b0C, the coefficient of performance (COP) of air-source heat pumps is typically about 3.3. This means that 3.3 kilowatt hours (kWh) of heat are transferred for every kWh of electricity supplied to the heat pump. At \u20138.3\u00b0C, the COP is typically 2.3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The COP decreases with temperature because it is more difficult to extract heat from cooler air. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Air-source heat pumps will operate with heating seasonal performance factors (HSPFs) that vary from 6.7 to 10.0, depending on their location in Canada and their rated performance. Natural Resource Canada has identified three regions where it would be viable to use air-source heat pumps. The first region is the West Coast, characterized as mild with high heat pump performance. The second region \u2013 southern Ontario, Nova Scotia and interior British Columbia \u2013 is colder, and requires a heat pump with higher performance. The third region includes colder regions in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador. Outside these regions, air-source heat pumps are not as economically attractive.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Energy Savings<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may be able to reduce your heating costs by up to 50 percent if you convert from an electric furnace to an all-electric air-source heat pump. Your actual savings will vary, depending on factors such as local climate, the efficiency of your current heating system, the cost of fuel and electricity, and the size and HSPF of the heat pump installed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More advanced designs of air-source heat pumps can provide domestic water heating. Such systems are called “integrated” units because heating of domestic water has been integrated with a house space-conditioning system. Water heating can be provided with high efficiency in this way. Water heating bills can be reduced by 25 to 50 percent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Heating and Cooling with a Heat Pump:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A heat pump is an electrical device that extracts heat from one place and transfers it to another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Air-source heat pumps perform two roles:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Draw heat from the outside air during the heating season<\/li>
  • Reject heat outside during the summer cooling season.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    How Does an Air-Source Heat Pump Work?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    An air-source heat pump has three cycles: the heating cycle, the cooling cycle and the defrost cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Heating  Cycle<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    During the heating cycle, heat is taken from outdoor air and “pumped” indoors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • First, the liquid refrigerant passes through the expansion device, changing to a low-pressure liquid\/vapor mixture. It then goes to the outdoor coil, which acts as the evaporator coil. The liquid refrigerant absorbs heat from the outdoor air and boils, becoming a low-temperature vapor.<\/li>
    • This vapor passes through the reversing valve to the accumulator, which collects any remaining liquid before the vapor enters the compressor. The vapor is then compressed, reducing its volume and causing it to heat up.<\/li>
    • Finally, the reversing valve sends the gas, which is now hot, to the indoor coil, which is the condenser. The heat from the hot gas is transferred to the indoor air, causing the refrigerant to condense into a liquid. This liquid returns to the expansion device and the cycle is repeated. The indoor coil is located in the ductwork, close to the furnace.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      The ability of the heat pump to transfer heat from the outside air to the house depends on the outdoor temperature. As this temperature drops, the ability of the heat pump to absorb heat also drops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      At the outdoor ambient balance point temperature, the heat pump’s heating capacity is equal to the heat loss of the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Below this outdoor ambient temperature, the heat pump can supply only part of the heat required to keep the living space comfortable, and supplementary heat is required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      When the heat pump is operating in the heating mode without any supplementary heat, the air leaving it will be cooler than air heated by a normal furnace. Furnaces generally deliver air to the living space at between 55\u00b0C and 60\u00b0C. Heat pumps provide air in larger quantities at about 25\u00b0C to 45\u00b0C and tend to operate for longer periods.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The Cooling Cycle<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        During the cooling cycle, the heat pump also dehumidifies the indoor air. Moisture in the air passing over the indoor coil condenses on the coil’s surface and is collected in a pan at the bottom of the coil. A condensate drain connects this pan to the house drain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        The Defrost Cycle<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        If the outdoor temperature falls to near or below freezing when the heat pump is operating in the heating mode, moisture in the air passing over the outside coil will condense and freeze on it. The amount of frost buildup depends on the outdoor temperature and the amount of moisture in the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        This frost buildup decreases the efficiency of the coil by reducing its ability to transfer heat to the refrigerant. At some point, the frost must be removed. To do this, the heat pump will switch into the defrost mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        • First, the reversing valve switches the device to the cooling mode. This sends hot gas to the outdoor coil to melt the frost. At the same time the outdoor fan, which normally blows cold air over the coil, is shut off in order to reduce the amount of heat needed to melt the frost.<\/li>
        • While this is happening, the heat pump is cooling the air in the ductwork.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          The heating system would normally warm this air as it is distributed throughout the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          One of two methods is used to determine when the unit goes into defrost mode. Demand-frost controls monitor airflow, refrigerant pressure, air or coil temperature and pressure differential across the outdoor coil to detect frost accumulation on the outdoor coil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Time-temperature defrost is started and ended by a preset interval timer or a temperature sensor located on the outside coil. The cycle can be initiated every 30, 60 or 90 minutes, depending on the climate and the design of the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Unnecessary defrost cycles reduce the seasonal performance of the heat pump. As a result, the demand-frost method is generally more efficient since it starts the defrost cycle only when it is required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


          \n\n\n\n

          Cold-Climate Air Source Pump System<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Cold climate air source heat pumps (CC-ASHPs) are high-efficiency heating and cooling systems that have recently become available in North America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Cold-climate heat pump unit, in today\u2019s heating cooling industry, is the opportunity to replace combustion-based systems. By this system, we can use only electricity even in the regions where older heat pumps couldn\u2019t perform or were not enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          To clarify, at 47\u00b0F, previous generations of heat pumps would start drifting in capacity. The result was the homeowners would feel cool air coming through their vents. So they had to manually switch over to the gas furnace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          TODAY, cold-climate heat pumps are designed to deliver up to 100% rated heating capacity at 5\u00b0F and up to 76% capacity at -13\u00b0F. As long as a heat pump can make it refrigerant cooler than the outdoor air, it can capture thermal energy and deliver it as indoor heat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Modern cold-climate heat pumps have variable-speed compressors designed to slow down and speed up to match system capacity with the load detected by indoor unit sensors. This makes heat pumps more energy efficient than fixed-capacity conventional systems but doesn\u2019t mean we can ignore the heat pump\u2019s range. Each variable-capacity system has a minimum and maximum capacity which is published in the manufacturer\u2019s technical literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
